Three to vie for Queen Genevieve title this year

A number of young women participated in this year’s annual Queen Genevieve Pageant for the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival to succeed 2017 Queen Genevieve Lain Wepper.

The pageant was held Aug. 10 at the Lafayette Hotel in downtown Marietta. The selection of the 2018 Queen Genevieve and other winners was sealed at that time and will be announced at the Coronation Ceremony at 7 p.m. Saturday on the entertainment barge at the Ohio River Levee.

This year’s three contestants are: Abby Brooker, Jocee Janicki and Kirsten Hannah.

In addition to the winner and runners-up, there will also be an award given for Miss Congeniality and Committee Choice. Those will be announced during a brunch Sunday for the pageant participants.

During the spring, posters and newspaper announcements were distributed throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley inviting candidates, ages 17-22 years of age, to participate for the opportunity to earn scholarship money toward college. Under one of the pageant requirements, the Queen candidates must be enrolled in an accredited educational institution.

The decision of who will be Queen Genevieve was made by a panel of judges at the scholarship pageant, and their scores were tabulated by a local accounting firm. The pageant consisted of personal interviews, on-stage modeling, questions asked on stage and the candidate profiles.

This year’s winner will receive a $1,500 scholarship, first runner-up will receive a $750 scholarship and second runner-up will receive a $500 scholarship.

In a separate event, the Little Miss and Mister Sternwheel pageant will be held on the festival’s opening night at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the ballroom at the Lafayette Hotel at 101 Front St., next to the Ohio River Levee.

The pageant is for boys and girls from 5 to 8 years old. The winning boy and girl will serve as the train-bearer and crown-bearer for the Queen Coronation at 7 p.m. Saturday. They will be judged on poise, appearance, on-stage introductions and a short personal interview with the judges. The girls will model party dresses and the boys will wear suits or Sunday best.

The Little Miss Sternwheel winner will receive a tiara, a sash and other prizes, including savings bonds. The Little Mr. winner will receive a captain’s hat, a sash and other prizes, including savings bonds. A first and second runner-up will also be chosen in each contest. All participants will receive trophies and prize packages.
