Busy June calendar on Blennerhassett Island

PARKERSBURG – A number of activities are planned during the month of June on Blennerhassett Island Historical State Park.

On Saturday, the island will present its next Second of Six Saturdays program, a nature walk called “All About Birds.”

At least 14 species of birds adapted to life along the river can be observed on the island. Participants can learn bird characteristics through scavenger-like clues including the food that birds eat; descriptions of feet, beaks, and overall bird shapes is part of the fun.

For visitors to Blennerhassett Island, there is no additional charge to participate in the walk. Those planning to participate should take the 1 p.m. Island Belle boat or earlier for the walk, which runs from 2-3:15 p.m. Tickets are required for the boat and are available at the Blennerhassett Museum of Regional History at Second and Juliana streets.

The next “Brunch with Margaret” will be June 12. Tickets are $41.95 per person and include admission to the museum, the boat ride, the mansion tour and a wagon ride. Reservations are required.

The program features a morning sternwheeler ride to the island where Margaret Blennerhassett – portrayed by Debra Conner – will greet visitors, take them on a tour of the Blennerhassett Mansion and hold a light brunch and program at the picnic pavilion.

A Sunrise Breakfast Cruise will be June 14, offering an early morning sternwheeler ride on the Island Belle with breakfast and a bird walk on the island. The cost is $22 for adults and $18 for children ages 3-12. The cruise requires advance reservations.

Blennerhassett Island will also be hosting Pioneer Heritage Day activities on June 14 and 15, featuring a variety of demonstrations and displays highlighting how things were done during pioneer days.

Several events are planned for the weekend of June 20-22 on Blennerhassett Island.

On June 20, the island will host it annual West Virginia Day birthday celebration with cake served at 1:30 p.m. The event will mark West Virginia’s 151st birthday.

The weekend will feature a Civil War Encampment and Reenactment on June 20, 21 and 22 on the island. Blennerhassett Island will be the setting for a recreated Civil War encampment, with battles on June 21 and 22 for onlookers to watch.

There will be an 1860s Exhibition Baseball Game on June 21. Players in period attire and using equipment of the 1860s will play the game, with the Ohio Village Muffins playing members of the Civil War militia on the island.
