Belpre Apple Butter Stir Off features a few twists

New location, pie eating contest returns, plus junior trot for pediatric cancer

From staff reports

After nearly four decades, the annual Belpre Apple Butter Stir Off is moving from Howes Grove Park to Civitan Park on Saturday and Sunday.

The Belpre Lions Club will hold its 39th annual Apple Butter Stir Off from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday.

This year’s event will feature concessions, crafters and vendors along with some new competitions, entertainment and other fun things to do, said club president Debbie Marshall.

“We have brought back one of the old-time favorites, the pie eating contest, which will pit Belpre High School, Warren High School, Parkersburg South High School and Parkersburg High School football players against each other,” said Marshall, adding the eating contest will be at 4 p.m. Sunday.

On Saturday morning, the Lions Club will begin registration at 8 a.m. and 9 a.m. for the Junior Trot for Pediatric Cancer and the race beginning at 9:30 a.m. The trot will have five age divisions starting with the age of 2 to 11. One hundred percent of the funds raised will go to pediatric cancer. Entry is $5 per child.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, there will be a Cook-Off using apple butter in the recipe. Bring a dish that can be served for breakfast, lunch, dinner or dessert along with the recipe. Entry is $5 for each category and cooks can enter one or all categories. Pre-register or register your dish at noon.

The Belpre Women’s Club will hold its third annual Canine Companion Costume Contest at 2 p.m. Registration will begin at 1 p.m. and the entry fee is $5 per dog. Finishing off the competitions for Saturday will be a Cornhole Tournament starting at 3 p.m. It is a team of two and can be male, female or co-ed. If there is a field of 20 teams the first place team will take home $200, a plaque and T-shirts, while second and third places will receive a plaque and T-Shirt. Pre-register or register at Civitan Park by 2 p.m.

On Sunday, a Pretty Baby Contest will be held at 2 p.m. Pre-registration is $25 by going to the Belpre Lions Event Page on Facebook. The cost is $25 to register at the park between noon and 1 p.m. Sunday.

There will also be a children’s area with inflatable, crafts and games and a 50/50 drawing each day, along with an auction on baskets with different themes and a raffle for cornhole boards. Johnny Appleseed will make an appearance during the weekend.

Also throughout the weekend, Belpre Presbyterian Church and Boy Scout Troop 91 will be cooking apple butter over an open fire.
