Oak Grove VFD craft and vendor show

It might be just October but the holiday shopping season — and Christmas spirit — is well underway. Soon, craft shows and bake sales will be popping up all over.

This Saturday, the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire Department will be holding its inaugural Fall in “the Grove” Craft and Vendor Show at the fire department. Organizer Misty Mason, an advanced EMT for the department, said this year they would like to take the opportunity to give back to the community.

“We hope to make this an annual event and would like to make enough money this year to adopt a couple families for Christmas through Community Action,” she said.

Secret Santa is a community program operated by Washington-Morgan Community Action that matches families in need of Christmas gifts with generous residents and businesses throughout the county that are willing to share their Christmas spirit and donations.

The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the track outside the fire department and will be moved inside in case of rain.

“I have about 20 vendors and crafters right now and they will all line up around the track,” Mason said.

Vendors include Rada Cutlery, Pampered Chef, Limelight makeup, Thirty-One and Avon and crafters will have crocheted items, woodwork, handmade pens and baked goods. There will even be gourmet caramel apples.

Bernice Malone is a Pampered Chef consultant from Newport who has been participating in these types of events since January. She said she will have a large display of some of the more popular items, including everything needed for one-pot meals.

“This will be the first of six vendor shows that I’m signed up for this season. I really enjoy doing them because you get to meet with the customer face to face,” she said.

It doesn’t hurt that the $20 vendor fee helps go toward the fundraising aspect.

“I’m a strong believer in that (Community Action) program. I work at MMH as my regular job and the department I was in adopted a family for Christmas,” Malone said.

Those wishing to donate, sponsor a family or volunteer can contact Washington-Morgan Community Action at 740-373-3745.

Families who wish to apply can contact the organization beginning Monday.
