Annual Pinewood Derby race will be Saturday

From staff reports

A pair of racing-related events at the Grand Central Mall on Saturday will offer something for all ages.

The annual pinewood derby race day will bring more than 300 local Cub Scouts together for the Kootaga District Pinewood Derby.

The mall is also hosting a race car display through the week and there will be an autocross event on Saturday.

In the pinewood derby, the Kootaga District was formed earlier this year with the combination of the Little Kanawaha District and the Blennerhassett District. Cub Scouts will be able to register as individuals or as a pack to race.

The Scout Class will be held for Cub Scouts to compete by rank. An Open Class Race will be held for anyone, Scouts BSA scouts, Leaders, parents and even the public to race.

Cub Scout and Open Class Racers can sign up to race online at the Buckskin Council webpage buckskin.org. Racers will be notified of their track location and start time by email after registering.

Races will be timed and the fastest racers in the district will advance to the Buckskin Council Championship race in Charleston on April 13. Each Cub Scout Pack can also register the fastest racer from their Pack race for the Council Championship.

This year’s event will also feature a mayor’s race at noon. Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp will be challenging other area officials to join the race.

The derby will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
