Marietta High celebrates Spirit Week, Homecoming

Marietta High School celebrates Spirit Week from Sept. 26 to 30, with activities scheduled all week. Spirit Days include Twin Day, Nerd v. Jock Day, Character Day, Class Color Day, and Orange and Black Day.

On Tuesday, Sept. 27, MHS girls participated in the annual girls’ football game.

On Thursday, Sept. 29, classes will compete in the traditional spirit games assembly, and on Friday, Sept. 30, student council will host a pep rally. Friday at half-time of the Marietta-Cambridge football game, the 2016 MHS Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned.

Five senior girls and five senior boys have been nominated:

Syndey Beavers, 17, is the daughter of Tom and Jody Beavers. She participates in competitive dance at Gel’s Dance Center and is a member of the Marietta Marquettes Dance Team. She has participated in track for four years and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She takes College Credit Plus classes, serves as a senior ambassador, and participates in the MHS HPAC group and children’s ministry at the Journey Church. Additionally, she is the current senior class secretary. She plans to attend a four-year university next year and major in early childhood education and participate on a dance team.

Amber Brooks, 17, is the daughter of Jamey and Christy Brooks. She is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and plays volleyball and basketball for MHS. She serves as captain of the volleyball team, and during her off season, she plays club volleyball for Aleta. She was employed as a lifeguard at the Marietta Aquatic Center over the summer. As a College Credit Plus student, she attends Washington State Community College full time. She will receive a liberal arts associate’s degree along with her high school diploma and plans to attend Ohio University next fall and pursue a career in the medical field.

Kelsey Hall, 17, is the daughter of Christopher and Kathleen Hall. She serves as the senior class vice president and participates in AFS, Key Club, Leo Club, HPAC, and math club. She is a member of the cross country, track, and swim teams and volunteers at Phillips Elementary. Kelsey plans to attend a four-year college and study early childhood education.

Bryce Macatol, 17, is the daughter of Matthew and Cathy Macatol. She is a member of NHS, Spanish Honor Society, Model United Nations, and math club. She plays tennis and volunteers at The Castle and Safety Town. Bryce plans to attend college next year and major in pre-health sciences.

Luanna Wriston, 17, is the daughter of Jeff and Alice Wriston. An honor student, Luanna is a member of the Marietta Marquettes, high school choirs, and Vocal Point. She has recently joined the women’s chorus at Marietta College. Luanna is active in the high school musicals as well as the Mid-Ohio Valley Player shows. She has volunteered at the food pantry and is active in other visual and performing art activities, like drawing or painting and performing at local businesses. Luanna plans to attend Wright State University next fall and double major in vocal performance and music education.

Matt Altenburger, 18, is the son of Andy and Jenny Altenburger. Matt plays on the MHS basketball team and works at the Levee House. He plans to attend a four-year college next fall and study business and finance.

Noah Clark, 17, is the son of James and Becky Clark. He is a member of National Honor Society and a peer tutor. He also participates in the Leo Club Board of Executives and is a MakerSpace founding member. Noah is vice president of the math club, takes guitar and piano lessons, and serves as the youth group leader for his church. Next year, Noah plans to attend Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tenn. and major in business. He hopes to use his skills in business, photography, and finance in his future career.

Isaac Danford, 18, is the son of Richard and Barbara Danford. Isaac plays varsity football, basketball, and baseball and takes honors and College Credit Plus classes at MHS. He plans to attend a four-year college, where he will major in biology and play college baseball next year.

Ben Dehmlow, 17, is the son of Jonathan and Susan Dehmlow. Ben is a fourth year starter and third year captain on the varsity soccer team and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He participates in youth group, HPAC, NHS, and Spanish Honor society. Ben plans to graduate MHS with honors and attend Wheaton, Miami, or The Ohio State University next year.

Travis Moore, 17, is the son of Scott Moore and Kim Smith. Travis is a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He participates in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Travis plans to attend college next year and study mechanical engineering.

The Junior Class Attendants are Jayde Prescher, 16, daughter of Connie Prescher, and Brice Gandor, 16, son of Aaron and Melissa Gandor. Jayde is a member of HPAC and a varsity soccer player. She dances with the Marietta Marquettes and frequently volunteers at the Humane Society, the Gospel Mission, and the Marietta Arbors. Brice plays snare drum for the Marietta Wall of Sound and is a member of the student advisory board of technology and MakerSpace. He serves as the junior class president.

The Sophomore Class Attendants are Grace Arnold, 15, daughter of Christopher and Amy Arnold and Matthew Bertram, 16, son of Paul and Joyce Bertram. Grace is a member of student council and the Marietta Wall of Sound. She participates in theater, HPAC, and environmental club. Matthew is a member of the football, basketball, and track teams. He loves to hunt and fish and is an usher at St. Mary’s Basilica.

The Freshman Class Attendants are Kaitlyn McClead, 14, daughter of Jason McClead and Stacey and Michael Merrill and Corbin Alkire, 14, son of Deron and Maralee Alkire. Kaitlyn plays school volleyball and club volleyball and participates in spring crew and NJHS. Corbin plays basketball and football and enjoys passing the football with his brothers.

Returning to crown this year’s queen and king are the 2015 homecoming queen Sadie Cavitt and the 2015 homecoming king Matthew Brookover.

Special thanks to Baker & Baker for again donating the crown. Thank you to Marietta High School Student Council for coordinating the Homecoming events. Thank you to Marietta High School class advisers for their hard work and dedication to Marietta High School students.

The Homecoming Dance is Saturday from 8 to 11 p.m. in the MHS gym. The theme is “Glow”, and it is sponsored by sophomore class. DJ services will be provided by Premier Productions. Dress is semi-formal. Tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door and are $10 each.

Class competitions are held in rock painting, float building, and games at the spirit assembly. Homecoming floats are built by each class and are featured in the Homecoming parade Friday at 5:45 pm. The senior class float theme is “Kick the Cats”; the junior class float theme is “Beach the Bobcats”; the sophomore class float theme is “Blast the Bobcats”; and the freshman class float theme is “Boil the Bobcats.” Parade route goes from the Marietta Middle School parking lot, up Putnam Street to Fourth Street to Don Drumm Stadium.
