Belpre superintendent accents positive with board

BELPRE – Following Monday’s meeting of the Belpre City Schools Board of Education, Superintendent Tony Dunn said the mild winter season has been beneficial for the school district compared to the several snow days experienced during last school year.

Dunn is hopeful the positive weather will continue through the rest of the winter.

“If we can get by with that, it really makes things run nicer. I know there have been several people already working on the baseball fields and softball fields at Civitan Park so we’re gearing up for those spring sports,” he said.

Looking at the second half of the current school year and the start of next year in August, Dunn said the district is continuing to offer College Credit Plus courses as dual-credit courses high school students can take to also earn college credit.

Belpre City Schools is working to expand the subject offerings through that program. New course offerings and programs have also been made available at the elementary school and have been well received by students and teachers, he said.

“We will possibly have College Credit Plus courses coming on in sciences and maybe social studies. It may be another year for those, but I know those teachers are working on graduate work for those classes,” he said.

Looking further ahead at 2017, Dunn said the district has a large amount of blacktop and concrete work that needs to be done in the coming year. The district will be demolishing the former elementary building on the Belpre High School property. The building has been unused except for storage for years, but a roof leak last year has rendered it unusable. Once it is demolished, the site will probably be converted into temporary parking until another use is found for it.

One of the actions approved at Monday’s board meeting was an agreement between Belpre City Schools and the Washington County Health Department to install and invoice the WCHD up to $1,800 for the installation of a salad bar at Belpre Elementary School. Dunn said that project would be done for the 2017-2018 school year.

Board president Fred Meredith announced that the board’s April 17 meeting will be moved from the Stone Administration Building to the library at Belpre High School. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. and will be preceded by a meet-and-greet program beginning at 6 p.m. to allow for tours of the school and a chance to meet the district’s new treasurer, Lance Erlwein, Meredith said. Erlwein was hired Feb. 9 and will begin working for the district on March 13.
