Ohio Genealogical Society

Monroe County Chapter

The Monroe County Chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will hold its monthly meeting Sunday, March 19, at 2 p.m. at the Monroe County District Library, Route 78 and Home Avenue in Woodsfield. Earnest Thode will speak on “Swiss Pioneers to Monroe County in 1819.”

Thode is a graduate of Purdue University and Stanford University. He taught German at high schools in Indiana and The Ohio State University, and is retired from the Washington County Public Library in Marietta, where he was local history and genealogy librarian for 21 years. His books range from German-English Genealogical Dictionary to Historic German Newspapers Online. He has been a presenter at various conferences of the Ohio Genealogical Society, Palatines to America, and the National Genealogical Society.

This will be an enlightening presentation, especially for those with Swiss heritage. Names discussed will be Jacob Tisher, the pioneer German Methodist missionary, along with Fankhauser, Marti, Tschappat, Nisperly, Ruegsegger, Schneider and Hugi. These were among the first of the large Swiss influx to Monroe and Belmont Counties. He has found their passenger list and some passport records, and is now writing a book about them, plus another group in Athens County with Baron de Steiguer, and a Labarthe family that went on to Louisiana.

All meetings are free and open to the public.
