It’s been 20 years since the Riverside Artists Gallery was first established. The local artists co-op continues to maintain a presence in downtown Marietta where a Suds and Samples event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday will give the public a chance to experience what the gallery has to offer.

“There will be beer, wine, hors d’oeuvres and music by local jazz musician Dan Swanton, as well as exhibits from our art students and some local artists demonstrating their crafts,” said gallery member Betsy Cook.

The “suds” are courtesy of the Marietta Brewing Company, but plenty of soft drinks and appetizers will also be available as the event provides a great evening out for the entire family.

“We’ll be showcasing artwork by students who have taken our classes in the past,” Cook said. “The idea is also to allow people to see (and experience) what we do here.”

Local artist Mike Trembly noted the gallery hosts monthly events throughout the year that are open to the public. But Suds and Samples is a special once-a-year ticketed event that provides an opportunity for folks to not only view, but also try their hand at creating artwork.

“This is different as we’re charging a ($10) fee to cover the art supplies, workshops and refreshments,” he said. “People may not know what an artists co-op is and this is a chance for them to get acquainted with us as well as support the local artists community.”

Trembly added that Riverside Artists is not just a gallery for viewing a variety of art, but most of the displayed artwork may be purchased. That includes paintings, sculptures, fabrics, jewelry, ironwork, stained glass, photography, pottery, mixed-media and other locally-created works.

Cook encourages those attending to sample the creative process of some local artists who will be on hand to teach drawing, alcohol ink-on-tile design, origami and collage.

“This event is open to everyone, and there will be plenty of free parking available just across the street in the city’s Parking Partners lot,” she said.

This is the second year Riverside Artists Gallery has sponsored Saturday Suds and Samples.

“We did this last year and it went over so well we decided to do it again,” Cook said.

The gallery also welcomes new member artists, most of whom reside within a 50-mile radius of Marietta, Trembly said, noting that the works of guest artists are featured for entire months throughout the year.

There are currently 14 member artists at the gallery.

“And we’re always looking for more new members,” Cook said.
