Warren board keeps urging levy support

VINCENT – With the May 2 primary just two weeks away, the Warren Local Schools Board of Education on Monday continued to encourage support for a bond issue and permanent improvement levy that will appear on the district ballot.

“This bond issue is not about the school board or the administration, it’s about our students and a tremendous opportunity for this community,” member Willie Holbert said during Monday’s regular board meeting.

The 30-year, 4.71-mill levy would raise $23 million to cover the school district’s share of the total $62 million project that includes construction of a new high school and elementary school as well as improvements to Warren Middle School and other district facilities.

“If this issue doesn’t pass, personally as a board member I don’t know what else to do,” Holbert added. “We’re doing all we can for our students.”

Warren Superintendent Kyle Newton said during a recent meeting with area construction trades groups, all indicated support for the bond issue.

Jered Mitchem, who chairs the committee seeking support for the issue, said there has been some pushback, including some misinformation about the proposed levy.

For example, he said some people have been led to believe the levy will be totally borne by Warren Township residents, but that’s not true.

Mitchem said, if passed, the levy will be spread across the entire Warren school district instead of just one township.

He said all the facts about the bond issue and permanent improvement levy are available on the warrenwarrior.com website and encouraged voters to visit the site before making a decision on the ballot issue.

In other business Monday, the board announced the hiring of three teachers on limited one-year contracts for the district in the 2017-2018 school year.

The new instructors include Lewis Russell, Warren Middle School eighth-grade math and science teacher; Amelia Maxson, Little Hocking Elementary third grade teacher; and Terry Reiter, Warren Middle School wellness/CTE instructor.
