Frontier’s Class of ’17 graduates
Seniors recall memories while looking ahead
NEW MATAMORAS–Filling the Frontier High School gymnasium at nearly maximum capacity Friday were friends and family waiting to see their loved ones graduate. Forty-nine seniors earned diplomas during the 49th annual commencement.
Seventeen students graduated with honors. There were two valedictorians and one salutatorian, Alexis Brookover.
“I don’t know what my future holds but I do know who holds my future,” was the class motto and is something class president and valedictorian Cala Curtis said she’s going to follow.
“I mean I’m not happy or sad I’m graduating. It’s just a part of life,” she said. “I’m pumped for college but again, it’s another chapter. I’m going to school with two of my cousins and it’ll be fun to have us all up there.”
Curtis plans to attend Alderson Broaddus University in the fall and isn’t sure what her major will be.
“I took a few introduction classes to explore my options,” she said. “I took one in business, education, and one that involves outdoor majors.”
The other valedictorian, Sammi Morris, is going to Ohio Valley University to major in energy management and project engineering.
“It’s bittersweet to be graduating. I’ll really miss everybody here and sports but I’m excited to continue my athletic career playing softball for OVU,” she said. “It’ll be exciting to meet new people.”
Senior McKenzi Smith said she’s going to one of the beauty schools in Marietta.
“I want to learn how to do hair but I’m not sure which school I want to go to yet,” she said. “I’m just excited and happy to be graduating and done with high school.”
Seniors Zach Cunningham and Landon Martin shared memories of their high school careers while waiting to line up for graduation.
“It’s crazy this time is actually here,” said Cunningham. “I’m happy about it, though. It’s time to take on the next chapter.”
Cunningham plans to continue playing baseball in college at Capital University in Columbus. He said he plans to major in health and sports science.
“I’m really looking forward to the future and what it holds for me,” said Martin. “It feels like we were in elementary school just yesterday.”
Martin will be heading to Washington State Community College in the fall to study electrical engineering.
“It’s all up to us now and what we want to do. I’m excited as a student and excited for my class,” he said.
