MOV’n Dragons to host orientation

There have been numerous times in the past 11 years that I have thought of Gretchen Feldmaier — the MOV’n Dragons founder and inspiration — and smiled. She felt so strongly about the Mid-Ohio Valley having a Dragon Boat team, that a few of us who gathered at her bedside knew that it was something we must do. Gretchen made it to our first meeting, and now, 11 years later, we are still going strong. Sometimes I feel as if she is still smiling down on us.

The MOV’n Dragons is the Mid-Ohio Valley’s Dragon Boat team. You may have seen us practicing on the Muskingum, or at one of the water events around Marietta. We are Cancer survivors or (as we like to be called) Thrivers, and supporters who get together during the warmer months for fun, fitness and friendship. You don’t have to be any kind of athlete, or have participated in group sports before. You don’t have to be a survivor either. Many of our members join to support the cause — working together to beat Cancer.

Our 11th season has just begun. To get it going we will be offering an “Orientation to Paddling” on Saturday, May 13, from 10 to noon at the Marietta High School Boat House on Gilman Avenue. This will be an opportunity for anyone curious or interested to find out more. No one is under any obligation to join. We are offering the “meet & greet” for folks to be able to find out who we are and what we do. Then, as the season gets going, there will be opportunities to be a casual paddler, or a competitive paddler.

I’ve never been a part of a team before. But this team is amazing! In addition to helping me stay fit, the support and friendship I’ve gained over the last 11 years are immeasurable. But then, that’s what we’re all about!
