Smoot launches performing arts series with Beach Boys tunes

The Smoot Theatre will open its 2017-2018 Performing Arts Series on Friday with a tribute to the Beach Boys.
Sail On: The Beach Boys Tribute will perform at 8 p.m. Friday at the Smoot at 213 Fifth St. in downtown Parkersburg.

Sail On: The Beach Boys Tribute” is based out of Nashville, Tenn. Members of Sail On have performed with musicians from Brian Wilson’s band, The Zombies, along with Earth Wind and Fire, Cheap Trick and Mark Lindsay. They have also produced recordings for Micky Dolenz.
The band features Wyatt Funderburk on bass/vocals, Mike Williamson on keys/vocals, Paul Runyon on keys/vocals, Matt Thompson on guitar/vocals and Jason Brewer on guitars/keys/vocals. The songs performed include “Surfin,” “Surfin Safari,” “Catch a Wave,” “Little Deuce Coupe,” “I Get Around” and many others.
The next show in the series will be the Russian String Orchestra on Oct. 6 at the Smoot.
Founded in 1991, the orchestra is composed of some of Russia’s finest young string players. It has carved a niche for itself under the creative baton of its founder and music director Misha Rachlevsky. About half of almost 2,000 concerts the orchestra has performed to date have taken place in Moscow. The rest were played on tours in 24 countries in Europe, North and South America and the Far East.
The orchestra’s discography of more than 30 albums has received widespread international acclaim, such as the Diapason d’Or award in France, Critics Choice in London’s Gramophone, Critics Choice in The New York Times and Record of the Year award in Hong Kong. Of about 1,000 compositions in the orchestra’s repertoire, more than 20 were written especially for the orchestra by composers from Russia, Europe and the U.S.
After the start of the new year, the Abba tribute band ABBA Mania will be making its second visit in two years to the Smoot State. The show will be Jan. 25, 2018, almost exactly two years after its first appearance at the Smoot.
On March 5, 2018, the Smoot will present the American Boychoir.
The American Boychoir has long been recognized as one of the finest musical ensembles in the country. Under the leadership of Fernando Malvar-Ruiz, Litton-Lodal Music Director, the American Boychoir has dazzled audiences with its unique blend of musical sophistication, spirited presentation and ensemble virtuosity.
The Smoot’s Performing Arts Series for 2017-2018 will end on April 27, 2018, with another performance by frequent Smoot visitor Jim Witter.
Over the years, Witter, an accomplished singer and pianist, has highlighted the words and music of many different renowned performers during his Smoot performances. The 2018 show will be “You’ve Got a Friend: Celebrating the Music of James Taylor, Carole King and More.” Songs will include classics such as “Fire and Rain,” “How Sweet it Is,” “I Feel the Earth Move,” “You’ve Got a Friend” and more.
