Groups serve Thanksgiving meals
From staff reports
Various organizations and churches will continue the annual Thanksgiving Day tradition of providing a free meal to community members on the holiday.
¯ The annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day at Norwood United Methodist Church at the corner of Oakwood Avenue and Colegate Drive in Marietta.
The menu will include a choice of ham or turkey, stuffing, gravy, mashed potatoes, green beans, a roll and pumpkin pie. To reserve a dinner or to have a dinner delivered call the church at 740-374-5606. There is a limit of six dinners per household for the delivery service. No take-out meals will be available, only dine-in and delivery.
The dinner is free and available to any family or individual who wants to enjoy a hot traditional Thanksgiving dinner. Reservations and dinner delivery requests may also be emailed to email@example.com with the subject line “Turkey Dinner RSVP.”
For more information, to volunteer or to donate money to help pay for food for the Norwood dinner, call the church at 740-374-5606. Volunteers are welcome to visit the church between 4 to 6 p.m. Nov. 22 to help with preparations. Delivery volunteers are asked to arrive at 9:30 a.m. Thanksgiving Day.
¯ In Williamstown, American Legion General George Post 159 began hosting its annual Community Free Thanksgiving Dinner in 2004 and the tradition has continued every year.
Volunteers from the Post, the Auxiliary, Sons of American Legion and the community share the “reason for the season” by preparing and serving the free Thanksgiving buffet that is open to all members of Post 159 and residents of Williamstown School District.
The meals are served from 1 to 4 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day. Home deliveries and carry-out meals are available. Call 304-375-5997 after 3 p.m. on the Wednesday or Thursday prior to Thanksgiving to schedule either pick-up or delivery. Anyone wishing to share Thanksgiving by donating food items or helping prep, serve or clean-up contact Post 159.
¯ In Waterford, Jukebox Pizza, at 650 Main St., will host its annual Thanksgiving Day Dinner from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The free community dinner was started by Jukebox Pizza owners Garrett and Becky Powers and has been continued by their son, Tyson Powers. Dinners can also be delivered to folks who may not be able to get to the pizzeria at 650 Main St. in Waterford.
¯ The Parkersburg Salvation Army will hold its annual free Thanksgiving Day Dinner beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day on Fifth Street in Parkersburg. The event will run until the food runs out or the people run out. The dinner is open to everyone.
No take-out meals will be provided this year, although deliveries to shut-ins are available by prior arrangement, Major Matthew Riley said.
More than 200 volunteers are expected to participate in the program at the Salvation Army, doing everything from cooking to serving to cleaning. There is always a need for more volunteers to deliver meals. Anyone interested in volunteering for service or for deliveries can contact the Salvation Army at 304-485-4529.
Riley said there has been a change in the past practice of providing food to surrounding counties. Previously, the Parkersburg location provided turkeys and fixings to locations in several counties. This year, Riley said they will only be able to provide fixings and asked the county groups to provide turkeys due to the drain on resources from responding to this year’s multiple hurricanes.
Riley said this year’s participating locations will be Pleasants County, 10:30 a.m.to noon, Senior Center, 209 Second St./Main Street, St. Marys, and Jackson County, noon to 2 p.m., Ravenswood High School, 100 Plaza Drive, Ravenswood.
¯ For the 10th year in a row, First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) at 1400 Washington Ave. in Parkersburg will be holding its Community Thanksgiving dinner at the church beginning at noon and continuing until the food is gone at the church’s Fellowship Hall.
Deliveries are available by calling the church office at 304-485-5253.
