For any book lover, Marietta is the place to be this weekend.

Both the Ely Chapman Education Foundation fall book giveaway and the Marietta Friends of the Library used book sale will take place, with plenty of page-turners for everyone.

“We have thousands of books,” said Katherine Pekruhn, president of the the Friends group. “We have fiction, nonfiction, historical, biographies, mysteries, thrillers and lots of children’s books.”

In addition, the sale will feature DVDs, books on CD and for the first time, comic books.

“These are brand new comic books that have never been sold, thanks to Asylum Comics,” said Pekruhn.

The money raised at the sale will help fund the library’s summer reading program and programs being developed in city schools.

On Friday, half price memberships to Friends of the Marietta Library will be available, reducing the cost from $12 to $6. The sale kicks off Friday with a sneak peek for members, opens to the public on Saturday and Monday and concludes Tuesday with the bag sale.

“We give you a bag and you get anything you can get in it for $2,” said Pekruhn. “It’s a good deal. People really get a good bargain.”

Just a few blocks away, readers can also stock up at the semi-annual book giveaway at Ely Chapman, held in conjunction with the center’s fall festival.

“We have 10,000 books,” said Alice Chapman, founder and chair of Ely Chapman. “I would say about 75 percent of them are brand new and the rest are gently used. It’s a phenomenal selection of books. It’s a great way to get Christmas presents or get books in the hands of people who love to read.”

Chapman said there are titles for all ages but the children’s book selection is a bit limited this time around. In addition to the giveaway, the fall festival, will include an indoor yard sale and food including chicken and noodles, Texas sheet cake and no-bake cookies.

“We have delicious food,” said Chapman.

The festival and book giveaway will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
