Driver, 95, dies after wreck; exposure blamed

A Lower Salem woman died Saturday after succumbing to exposure following a one-vehicle car accident in Fearing Township.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, a 2010 Mercury Milan driven by Virginia L. Yerkey, 95, went off the right side of the roadway near milepost 5, struck a tree, a utility pole and then multiple trees. Yerkey exited the vehicle where she then died from environmental exposure.

The crash occured about 2:13 p.m.

Yerkey was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash. Alcohol and drugs are not considered to be factors, according to the patrol.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and Fearing Township Fire Department also responded to the crash.
