Winter education series for bike enthusiasts

Local adventure enthusiasts have kicked off a series of shop talks to encourage new activity on the local trails and rivers.

“We’re calling it ‘The More You Know,'” said Lincoln Smith, service manager of the Marietta Adventure Company. “I’m doing the flat fix class and we’ll have a guy come in to talk about kayak fishing, a triathlete talking about how to train and proper nutrition and stretching.”

Ryan Smith, co-owner of the adventure company on Second Street, said the educational series, which is free to the public, is geared at making sure first, and subsequent experiences with recreation are positive ones.

“Going into this time of the year we’re doing inventory and have a little more time for the education side of things. We don’t just want to get people into the store, we want them to have a positive first experience when they go out,” he said. “We’re also going to do an overview of the trails that are around here and what’s allowed on each of them.”

The first of the series was Thursday with a repeat Saturday at 4 p.m., a flat fix class to go over troubleshooting, what to look for and what gear is needed for both road and mountain bike tires.

“But I’m also looking at a basic maintenance class where we’re going over lubing your chain and making minor adjustments,” said Lincoln.

On Jan. 27 the nutrition, hydration and stretching focus will be taught with discussions on how the three play into warm up and cool down from physical activity.

Shop talks are held on the second floor, away from the main sales floor and attendees are given time to ask questions. Attendees are asked to first check in on the first main floor, and the group will head upstairs at the start time.

Participants may also take 20 percent off bike maintenance items the day of the talk and are welcome to bring their own bicycles/wheels to the clinics.
