2 hurt in Boaz trailer fire
Neighbors help occupants escape safely
BOAZ, W.Va. — Neighbors were credited with helping two people get out of a burning home in the Shawnee Mobile Home Park late Monday afternoon.
The Williamstown and Vienna Volunteer Fire Departments were sent to a report of a fully involved trailer fire at 147 Onward Road, Boaz, at 4:46 p.m. Monday, according to a supervisor at the Wood County 911 Center. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Neighbor Jessica Conny said she and a friend were jumping on a trampoline in the trailer park when they saw smoke they initially believed was coming from a small bonfire.
“We went over to the neighbors to play with their dog, and we saw tons of smoke coming over the yard, and we knew it wasn’t a bonfire,” she said.
Her brother, Jacob, heard screaming and saw a man emerge from the home.
“It looked like he fell out of the building onto the deck, and they (neighbors) were pulling him out,” Jacob Conny said.
Conny ran back to his house, yelling for someone to call 911.
“It wasn’t even 20 seconds and the whole thing caught fire,” he said.
Vienna Fire Chief Steve Scholl said his firefighters saw black smoke as they made the turn at Summit Road approaching the fire from the south. Their Williamstown counterparts spotted it when they passed 84 Lumber north of the site.
Neighbors shut off gas to the trailer and helped the occupants get out, Scholl said. There were oxygen tanks in the home, but he could not say immediately whether they contributed to the fire.
Firefighters had the blaze under control within five minutes of arriving on the scene, he said.
The Wood County Fire Investigation Team was en route to the scene around 5:30 p.m. Monday, Scholl said. He said he did not expect to have additional information on the identities or conditions of the occupants or cause of the fire until this morning.
The two occupants of the trailer were transported to Marietta Memorial Hospital.
