Fun at the Waterford Fair

ERIN O’NEILL The Marietta Times Cousins Laykyn Jones, left, and Kaylynn Huck, right, were just hanging around in the animal barn Thursday in preparation for gates to open at 4 p.m. Both girls are showing animals this year.

Aside from some gray skies and a few scattered sprinkles, the first day of the Waterford Community Fair were off to a great start Thursday.

“It’s been really smooth going,” said Missy Antill, president of the fair board. “We really have a lot of help. When they say it’s a community fair, it really is a community fair.”

The morning started with animal weigh-ins and photos and many young people were just hanging around the fairgrounds, literally waiting for the gates to open.

“I love coming to the fair,” said Kaylynn Huck, 7, a Waterford seventh grader who was swinging in a hammock above cows in the livestock building. “My favorite thing is to be with my family and to ride the rides. I love the big ones.”

In the hammock next to her was cousin Laykyn Jones, 13, of Waterford, who brought a pig and cows to show.

“This is such a great thing for the kids to be able to participate in,” said Antill. “It teaches them so much and they are the next generation to keep this fair going.”

Young people are also pitching in at the various concessions and booths on the midway.

“This is our biggest fundraiser and the kids all get involved,” said Jannessa Tuten, treasurer of the Waterford Pee Wee Football boosters. The teams have a permanent building where they sell lemon shakes.

While the grounds were fairly quiet in preparation Thursday afternoon, Antill said she expected huge crowds in the evening when rides were free from 6 to 8 p.m.

Calliope Productions out of New Matamoras was in charge of taking eight rides and owner Jeff Chaffin was busy preparing to open his funnel cake stand.

“We have done this for several years and the community always comes out to support it,” he said.

The fair parade will line up this afternoon at 5:30 p.m. at Fort Frye High School and kick off at 6 p.m. Highlights still to come at the fair include the hog sale and tractor pull Saturday, the Smith Family Singers and the truck and tractor pull Sunday.
