Before Hobby Lobby comes to the former Kmart shopping plaza in Vienna, another tenant is leaving.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries will close at the end of the day today, according to an email received Wednesday from the company’s press office. No reason was provided for the closure of the restaurant, which opened in Vienna in 2013.

“I hate to lose any business, and Five Guys was a very popular chain,” Vienna Mayor Randy Rapp said.

Rapp said the timing is unfortunate because he expects a big influx of traffic to that area once Hobby Lobby moves into the former Kmart location. The nearest Hobby Lobby is located in Zanesville, so the mayor said he expects people to come from out of town to shop there and eat at local restaurants while they’re here.

“I wish they would have (waited) for the Hobby Lobby to open,” Rapp said. “I really think they’re missing a huge opportunity.”

In 2018, Five Guys won the Harris Poll Equitrend survey’s “Burger of the Year” title for the second consecutive year. It’s ranked 41st among the top 500 food chains, according to restaurantbusinessonline.com.
