OU closed due to armed suspect still at large

Early this afternoon, law enforcement officers were continuing to search for a man who committed an armed robbery a 9:24 a.m. today at Station Street Apartments off West Union Street.

According to an Athens Police Department report, the female victim was robbed at gunpoint in the parking lot by an African-American man, 6’1″ to 6’2″ in height, wearing a blue hoodie and blue jeans and carrying a handgun. He reportedly has cornrows in his hair, an unkempt goatee and “strong body odor.”

The man allegedly stole $5 from the victim and was seen fleeing in the direction of Stocker Center/Oxbow trail area.

Athens Police are currently searching for the suspect.

OUPD also immediately responded to the area and began searching for the subject.

Though the event occurred close to its campus, Ohio University did not issue a “lockdown” because there had been no confirmed sightings of the suspect on campus. However, several buildings and departments have increased their levels of security and watchfulness, according to the university’s emergency information page.

Ohio University Vice President of Students Ryan Lombardi tweeted that OU President Roderick McDavis has made the decision to close the Athens campus immediately and campus will reopen Thursday morning.
