City schools participates in Facebook contest
Marietta City Schools is seeking a $25,000 boost to a program designed to prepare students for potential career paths through a Facebook contest.
Building Bridges to Careers is among the 200 nationwide entries in State Farm insurance’s Neighborhood Assist program. The top 40 vote-getters will receive $25,000 from the company.
The Building Bridges initiative got started last year, bringing together school, business and community leaders to look at ways that all three groups can work together to not only help students learn about and prepare for possible jobs but also make sure the schools are contributing to the development of the workforce the area needs.
According to its Neighborhood Assist entry, Building Bridges to Careers would use the $25,000 to develop a website with “a library of problem scenarios that local businesses encounter on a regular basis.” Teachers could access the materials and have their students work on solutions to real-world problems from local industry. The website would also feature videos of local employees discussing and demonstrating how certain skills apply to their jobs.
Voting continues through Monday. Individual Facebook users can vote as many as 10 times a day.
