Belpre hearings cover gas aggregation proposal

BELPRE – Belpre City Council held the first of two public hearings Monday night on the discussion of gas aggregation.

Members of the public will be able to hear from the Volunteer Energy company again at 6:30 p.m. June 24. The public hearings are being held to discuss gas aggregation, which the city of Belpre has chosen to partner with the energy company on. The city will be offering its residents the natural gas and electric aggregation services.

Fred Holmes with Volunteer Energy said citizens will be able to receive the services and express their comments and concerns during the meeting. The motion will be brought before council on three readings before being passed, he said.

“Timing is everything,” Holmes said. “And we will be here answering questions.”

Not everyone in the city has to make the switch; residents can choose not to, officials said. Letters will be sent to those wishing to participate, explaining the terms and conditions.

Dave Ferguson, Belpre safety-services director, brought up the need to look into ordinances related to property fences. Council said it would look into the ordinances.

Councilwoman Debbie Marshall said a committee meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. June 19 to discuss landscaping, abandoned vehicles and demolition.

Civitan Park in Belpre will be closed beginning around noon on Wednesday and ending around noon Saturday. The jogging track around the park will be repaired during the closure, causing the rest of the park to be closed.

Mayor Mike Lorentz said the closure took place last year and there was no way around closing the park.

“I just know there are a lot of people from the surrounding communities that utilize our park,” said Councilwoman Susan Abdella.

“There’s no way to secure the park without securing the track,” Lorentz said.
