Broughton’s social to help Healthy Kids Appalachia

This year’s annual Broughton Ice Cream Social will combat hunger in more ways than one.

Officials announced Wednesday that the proceeds from the all-you-can-eat ice cream extravaganza will help expand the “Healthy Kids Appalachia” hunger program and will support the efforts of the Southeastern Ohio Food Bank.

Both initiatives are being spearheaded by the Hunger Solutions task force, which is a partnership of the Memorial Health System, Peoples Bank and Marietta College.

“We came together just over a year ago to see what we could to do eliminate hunger in Washington County and in the Mid-Ohio Valley. We’ve made some progress. There’s still more to do,” said Chuck Sulerzyski, President and CEO of Peoples Bank.

One of the task force’s first major projects was starting the “Healthy Kids Appalachia” program, said Memorial Health System president and CEO Scott Cantley.

“It’s not just about the immediate need but it’s about a more long-term education about nutrition,” he said.

That program started in January and offered a 12-week nutritional education to 10 second-grade classrooms in the Marietta school district.

The program was very successful and the task force members hope the funds from the ice cream social will enable them to expand the program to other Washington County and even Wood County, W.Va. school districts, said Cantley.

Additionally, the funds will be used to help the Southeastern Ohio Food Bank get more bang for their buck when it comes to purchasing food for local food banks.

“We want to help them get large quantities of food with a long shelf life at a cheaper rate,” said Sulerzyski.

Local food pantries, shelters and soup kitchens that register with the SEOFB would be able to use the discount food purchasing program, said Peoples Bank Executive Vice President Richard Stafford.

Eleven Washington County organizations are already members of the SEOFB, he added.

This will be the 30th anniversary of the annual ice cream social, which is always held during National Ice Cream Month in July, said Dave Broughton, sales operation manager of Broughton Foods in Marietta.

During the past 29 years, the fundraiser has raised more than $450,000 for 38 organizations.

This year’s event will be held July 21 from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Washington County Fairgrounds.

As always, Broughton will donate all the ice cream, supplies and equipment for the event. The J.M. Smucker Company will donate toppings for more than 10,000 sundaes and the Marietta Brewing Company will brew the root beer used to make around 5,000 floats.

Tickets are $3.50 in advance and $4 the day of the social.
