Dunham VFD cancels social

Organizers of the upcoming Dunham Volunteer Fire Department Ice Cream Social have canceled their upcoming event.

Dunham Fire Chief Ernie Hoschar said, after a special meeting with the firefighters Sunday, they decided to combine their social with the Love For Linda benefit from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Warren High School, 130 Warrior Drive, Vincent. The social was also scheduled for Saturday.

Marks, 56, a longtime bus driver for Warren Local Schools, is in line for a heart transplant. While she awaits the transplant, proceeds from the benefit will help the Marks family with expenses during their trips to Columbus for treatments.

Hoschar said because that weekend was going to be full of events, including Christmas in July in Barlow and the Sweet Corn Festival and Broughton Ice Cream Social in Marietta, the public might be spread a bit too thin to support all the events.

“We thought it was better to support the Linda Marks benefit and cut our losses,” Hoschar said.

While an ice cream social can be a major fundraiser for a fire department, Dunham will have other fundraisers to make up for it in the fall, Hoschar said. He expects a gun raffle Saturday will bring in $600 to $800 because all tickets have been sold.

Dunham plans to cook the traditional open-pit chicken and have it available for the benefit at Warren High School. Department members will help serve at the benefit, too. Hoschar also said most of the prizes will be included in the auction for Love for Linda.
