Ohio’s Lt. Gov. visits Marietta Monday

Lt. Gov. Mary Taylor is expected to visit Marietta on Monday to discuss the state’s upcoming biennial budget and its effects on small businesses.

While the event is closed to the public, Taylor will talk to the owners and employees of Schafer Leather Store, 140 Front St.

Chris Brock, communication director for Taylor, said the longtime downtown business was selected because it has been a family-owned business for several generations and it has persevered since 1867 despite business challenges throughout the decades.

Store manager Karen Briley said it is exciting when anyone comes to the store to look at the economic side and to take the heartbeat of the community.

“It’s nice to get our voices heard not only from our local government but even up higher,” Briley said.

Taylor served on Green City Council and in the Ohio General Assembly. She was elected auditor of the state in 2006. In January 2010, Ohio Gov. John Kasich announced she would be his running mate in his bid to defeat incumbent governor Ted Strickland. Kasich and Taylor were sworn into their respective offices Jan. 10, 2011.

Taylor’s goal during Monday’s presentation will be to highlight several points included in Kasich’s 2014-15 budget and how they affect small businesses, such as Schafer Leather Store, Brock said.

Those points from Kasich’s 2014-15 budget include a 10 percent income tax cut, 50 percent small business tax cut, tax reforms and tax relief for low-income Ohioans, increase in graduation rates, providing incentives to colleges and universities to graduate more students, directing dollars to the state’s classroom, encouraging sustainable improvements and new education choices.

“I am pleased to have Mary Taylor down,” said Ohio Rep. Andy Thompson, R-Marietta. “She has a grasp on financial essentials.”

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. Monday.
