Roar still on, but boat races canceled

Expected unsafe river conditions have led organizers to cancel this weekend’s powerboat races, but other aspects of the 13th annual Marietta Riverfront Roar will continue.

Heavy rains throughout the week, coupled with high river levels to the north, are expected to cause the Ohio River to crest around 26.3 feet Thursday afternoon. While no more rain is in the forecast beyond Thursday morning and the river level is expected to drop, it is still projected to be well over 20 feet on Saturday morning, when tuneups and testing for the boats were scheduled to begin.

Weather for the weekend is expected to be sunny. Gary Williams, chairman of the Riverfront Roar committee, said Friday and Saturday’s entertainment, the Run for the Roar 5K and Sunday’s car show would all go on as planned, with Saturday’s entertainment actually starting at 1 p.m. instead of 5. The fireworks show slated for 9:30 p.m. Saturday will also go on.
