Fighting fires with foam

Chief C.W. Durham instructs Marietta firefighters Monday on the operation of a new foam fire suppression unit recently installed on one of the department’s pumper trucks by Finley Fire Equipment in McConnelsville. Two more of the city pumpers and a ladder truck will also be upgraded with control panels and tanks that allow the use of Class A and Class B foam when fighting fires. Durham said the foam combines with and breaks down the surface tension of water which will help extinguish fires faster and will require less water, saving property from the amount of damage that can result from putting a blaze out with water alone. He added that the foam system will also make fire suppression safer for firefighters by putting out fires more quickly. The system for all four vehicles is being funded through a $94,000 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The city’s total match for the grant is $4,700.
