Bicyclist crashes on 530 hill

A Marietta man was transported to Grant Medical Center shortly before 6 p.m. Wednesday following a bicycle accident in Lowell.

Steve Schoonover, 51, of 110 Marshall Road, was riding his bicycle westbound on Ohio 530 when he lost control, said Trooper David Handschumacher of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

The portion of Ohio 530 consists of a steep hillside, which Schoonover had been riding down, he added.

“He got going to fast and hit a building pretty hard,” said Handschumacher.

It was determined at the scene that Schoonover had suffered a broken collarbone. He was transported via MedFlight to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was not thought to have life-threatening injuries, said Handschumacher.

Schoonover had been wearing a helmet when the crash occurred.

His equipment would suggest he is an avid cyclist, said Handschumacher.

“With the bike he’s riding, his helmet, and the route he’s taking, it seems like he rides often,” he said.

A call to Grant Medical Center regarding Schoonover’s condition Thursday was not returned.
