Harper sworn in as city treasurer

Marietta Treasurer-elect Cathy Harper was sworn into office Monday to complete the unexpired term of former treasurer Valerie Holley who retired Nov. 27.

Leslie Haas, chairwoman for the Washington County Republican Party’s executive committee, said Harper will begin her treasurer duties today.

“The Marietta City Republican Central Committee met, as required by Ohio law, at the earliest possible time after Valerie Holley’s date of retirement to elect Cathy as her replacement,” Haas said. “The committee has to wait at least five days and take action in no more than 45 days of the former treasurer leaving office.”

Holley, who retired one month short of 20 years as city treasurer, said new regulations impacting health care costs for government workers entering the state’s Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) was a factor in her decision to retire early.

Marietta voters elected Harper to the treasurer’s office during the Nov. 5 general election.
