Pool for port authority position down to 2

The Southeastern Ohio Port Authority’s search for a new director could soon be at an end, as the candidates have been narrowed down to two.

David Haas, secretary-treasurer for the port authority, said the final two candidates were narrowed down from 25 initial resumes.

“We narrowed it down to eight,” Haas said. “We interviewed face-to-face four and three interviewed via Skype. We narrowed that down to three. One of the candidates has withdrawn.”

Haas said the hope is to hire one of the final two candidates in the very near future.

“We want to get someone seated as soon as possible, but we want to make sure we get the right person,” he said, adding that there was a need to get a new director to “keep the projects going for economic growth in the area.”

After Port Authority Director Terry Tamburini announced his retirement in late 2013, a search committee was formed to hire a new director.

Ron Cooley, vice secretary/vice treasurer for the port authority and CEO of Peoples Savings Bank, said that though Tamburini has resigned from his post, he’s still semi-active.

“(He is still acting as director) on a limited basis,” he said.

Haas said he wouldn’t disclose the names of the candidates until an official hire was made.

Haas said there was good variety between the candidates and the right candidate will have a wide range of abilities.

“(We’re looking for) people who can talk to the business community and make business deals,” he said. “Someone who will have an understanding of business development,…leadership qualities…and be able to multi task.”

Haas said the final two candidates are not from Marietta, but do reside in the area.

Board member Bradley Ebersole, also president of Washington State Community College, said interviews for the final candidates will be held sometime next week. He said that after the interviews, a board meeting will determine who the new director is.

“The full board will meet and make a determination after the interviews,” he said. “We’re looking forward to getting an excellent director. We’re very hopeful.”
