Porch fire in Newport

A small porch fire in Newport was quickly contained by responding agencies Tuesday afternoon.

The fire occurred at a single story home at 305 Poinciana St, said Newport Volunteer Fire Chief Steve Foutty.

“It was just some garbage that was on the porch. We got there and put it out before it got into the structure itself,” said Foutty.

The structure only sustained minor smoke damage and a bit of discoloration, he said.

St. Marys Volunteer Fire Department provided mutual aid. Mutual aid calls to Reno and Grandview Volunteer Fire Departments were canceled once the fire was contained, said Foutty.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal’s Office will not be called to investigate, he said. He declined to say whether foul play was suspected.
