Arrests in year-long drug probe

A massive, year-long drug investigation in Monroe County culminated this week in the arrest of 29 of the 30 people implicated in area drug trafficking during the probe.

While some of the arrests are related, the majority are based on several different internal investigations handled by the Monroe County Task Force over the past year, said Monroe County Sheriff Charles Black Jr.

“We might start on one (suspect) and branch off and get into another little cell. As it would go down it would branch off,” he explained.

Monroe County’s three-person task force conducted the various investigations. The crimes ranged from the sale of prescription medications and marijuana to heroin and cocaine, said Black.

Hundreds of hours of overtime and more than $18,000 in drug buy money was used during the investigation. The funding was made possible by grants through the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services, which funds the Monroe County Task Force and the Southeast Narcotics Unit.

The investigation began in May 2013 and was presented to this month’s Monroe County grand jury, said Black.

Monroe County Prosecutor James Peters said typical Monroe County grand jury meetings result in eight to 12 indictments.

The grand jury returned 30 drug-related indictments and a single indictment not related to drugs this month.

The sheriff’s office began rounding up and arresting suspects early Tuesday morning. The Washington County Sheriff’s Office assisted by sending a van to pick up 10 individuals to be housed at the Washington County Jail, said Black.

All but one of the indicted individuals have been arrested and are being housed at jails across the state, said Black. A final suspect charged out of the investigation-30-year-old Jeremy K.
