Mid-Ohio Valley Health Dept. head resigns
PARKERSBURG – Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department Executive Director Dick Wittberg has tendered his resignation after a decade with the agency.
Wood County Commissioner Blair Couch, chairman of the Board of Health, said Wittberg resigned during the board’s meeting on Thursday. He did not give a reason for his decision, Couch said.
Wittberg could not be reached for comment Friday evening.
The resignation is effective May 5, but Wittberg will be utilizing vacation time until then, Couch said.
Couch said it’s become a cliche for people to say they want to leave a place better than they found it, but Wittberg lived up to those words.
“I believe that’s true,” he said. “Dick certainly spent 10 years as Board of Health director, won numerous grants and awards during his service.”
During Thursday’s meeting, Couch said, the board voted to appoint department Finance Director Sandra Ellenwood as interim director, a title she held a decade ago before Wittberg was hired.
“She’ll be a quality person to be able to handle the duties of the director until a new director is hired,” he said, adding the department has a “wonderful staff of dedicated employees.”
The board also formed a search committee and will begin accepting executive director applications soon, Couch said.
