Times’ news staff wins 9 awards in APME Ohio newspaper competition

The Marietta Times took four first-place, two second-place, and three third-place Division II awards during Sunday’s annual Ohio Associated Press Media Editors newspaper awards ceremony in Columbus.

The Times was one of 64 daily newspapers that submitted a total 2,599 entries in the contest, which featured news and sports stories, features, editorials, columns, graphics and photos from 2013. Division II includes newspapers with daily circulations of 8,000 to 12,999.

The Times was named third in the category of overall General Excellence. The Times staff also received a first place award for Best Explanatory Reporting for “Preventative Measures for Finances,” and a second place award for “Progress 2013: The Great Flood 100 Years Later” in the Best Special Section category.

Features reporter and copy editor Erin O’Neill took both first and second place awards in the Best Informational Graphics category for “Must-have Medical Tests” and “Founders’ Final Resting Spots,” respectively.

O’Neill also received the first place award for the Best Full Page Layout category for her page entitled “Berry Sweet.” And she took third place for “Heart Health” in the Best Illustration category.

Times senior copy editor Jim Bartholow earned first place for a sampling of his work in the Best Headline Writer category.

Times contributing photographer Robb DeCamp won third place in the Best Photographer category.

Division II entries were judged by editors from the Cadillac (Michigan) News and The (St. Joseph, Michigan) Herald-Palladium.
