Belpre High greenhouse project gets $8,000 grant

Local organizations that help women and children in crisis, assist children of all ages in learning and work to improve the quality of life in their communities were awarded nearly $147,000 in grants Tuesday by the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation.

The 2014 spring grants announced Tuesday at the Our Community’s Foundation office in Parkersburg were among $203,555 bestowed through the Spring Community Action Grants program through the foundation, which includes the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation and the regional affiliate foundations of Doddridge, Jackson, Mason and Ritchie counties and the Little Kanawha area. Recipients came from an 11-county area: Wood, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Jackson, Mason, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane and Wirt counties in West Virginia and Washington County, Ohio.

“It was an enjoyment reading everybody’s grants and seeing the different projects,” said Cynthia Brown, co-chairwoman of the grants committee.

The largest grants – $10,000 apiece – went to the YMCA of Parkersburg for installation of an access control/security system and the Family Crisis Intervention Center for operation support that is vital to its continued work.

“Without this, we were going to have to close some of our services,” said Sharon Lynch, human resources director for the center, which provides shelter, legal advocacy, education and other services to people affected by domestic and sexual violence in an eight-county area. “This is going to help us keep our electric on and our water on.”
