Marietta BOE: 18 new teachers take part in orientation

Orientation for 18 new teachers in the Marietta City School District was completed last week and Ruth Kunze, director of curriculum and technology for the district, gave a report on how it went to the board of education Monday.

“We just completed a three-day orientation for new teachers last week,” she said. “This year we moved from one-day orientation to three because we felt there were so many new initiatives going on…we would like to invest time before school starts with our new teachers.”

Kunze said teachers learned about many things, including technology.

“It was all about integrating curriculum into the classroom, blended learning, where students work online and do work there,” she said. “We taught tools for that, like creating a website. They learned a lot about the integration of technology into curriculum.”

A Welcome Back to School meeting will be held today from 7:30 a.m. until 2 p.m. for teachers of all grades to make sure they are prepared for the start of the school year on Wednesday.

In other business, Tasha Werry, director of community outreach for the district, introduced partners for two schools to the board.

Juli Wimsatt, human resources generalist for Thermo Fisher, spoke about the company’s involvement with Putnam Elementary School.

“Thermo Fisher…(has) actually been partnered with them for several years,” she said.

The company provides supplies like tissues and other items, as well as Box Tops.

“We’re very excited to help them again this year,” she said. “Last year we were able to raise a little over $800 in Box Tops for Education, as well as supplies so that (the school) didn’t have to replenish any of those items throughout the year. We were very successful last year and hope to give even more support this year.”

Meanwhile, Settlers Bank is officially partnering with Harmar Elementary School and Marietta Middle School.

Jeff Welch, senior vice president at the bank and a former board of education member, said he thought it was great to make a partnership official.

“Last year we helped with a program that they ran at the middle school, a financial literacy type class,” he said. “We look forward to doing something similar to that (this year)…Our management team is excited to be actively involved with both schools and (we) look forward to a long relationship,” he said.

Werry said the partnerships with the businesses help everyone.

“It’s good for both the school and the local business,” she said. “It can provide schools with resources, not just financial; it can be volunteers. It also helps the local businesses…find ways to interact with schools…It builds relationships in the community.”
