Barber shop celebrates 20 years

Muskingum Barber Shop is celebrating its 20th anniversary on Saturday.

“There will be pizza and cupcakes for anyone who comes in to celebrate with us,” said owner Paula Bigley.

Bigley said she’s very excited that she can now say the shop has been a business for 20 years, a milestone many small businesses don’t make.

“We would like to say thank you to all our loyal customers. We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them,” said Bigley.

“It just feels like a major accomplishment,” she said.

It’s one she shares with another long-time staple at the shop.

“The past 20 years have been awesome, and I am so glad to have been here with Paula for so much of it,” said Amy Leister, the president of operations at Muskingum Barber Shop. “I love seeing how the clients have just built up over the years.”

Interacting with those clients is one of Bigley’s favorite aspects of the profession.

“I am a people person, so I love the relationship we have with our regulars,” said Bigley, who has been a barber for 26 years.

Leister has worked at the shop with her for 19 and a half of those years, and they have just recently hired on a new employee, Ashley Koon.

Between the three of them, they deliver between 200 and 250 haircuts a week, many of them to men who have been getting trimmed at the shop every two weeks or so for years.

Bigley said she got interested in the cosmetology program at the Washington County Career Center when a friend told her about the course in high school. From there she studied at the Ohio State College of Barber Styling in Columbus.

“I don’t like perms, I don’t like hair coloring, I just prefer cuts,” Bigley said.

The Muskingum Barber Shop is open Monday through Friday.

“Walks-ins are welcome every day of the week, and you can schedule appointments with Paula on Fridays,” said Leister.

“Haircuts run at $12 and a beard trim is $3,” said Leister.
