Noble County man murdered in North Carolina

Grandfather remembers him fondly

From staff reports

A Noble County man was one of the victims of a double homicide a week ago in Goldsboro, N.C.

Keith E. Presnell, of Summerfield, was found dead along with his girlfriend, Kathryn B. McCloud, 25, of Goldsboro, N.C., in a house McCloud resided in that was owned by her grandmother.

News coverage of the crime lists Presnell’s age as 27, while an obituary lists it as 25.

According to witv.com, just before 6 a.m. on Nov. 30, Wayne County N.C. 911 Center received a call from McCloud’s grandmother stating that her son Steven M. Mackie, 49, who also resided at the apartment, had killed her granddaughter and her boyfriend. She said Mackie was bipolar and believed to be off his medications. She told the dispatcher Mackie told her that the pair was trying to kill him and he shot them both.

Witv.com also reports that when asked by the 911 operator the condition of the victims, McCloud’s grandmother responded grimly.

“One’s in my foyer, dead…I think he is. There’s so much blood, yes,” she said.

She went on to state in the report that she thought Mackie was looking out the window for the police to arrive while smoking a cigarette after the shooting. He was taken into custody and charged with two counts of murder.

Roger Presnell, 65, of Caldwell, told The Marietta Times Thursday that his step-grandson originally went to North Carolina in search of work.

“He went down to do timber work on the gas lines,” he said. “When he was there he got hooked up with a girl.”

Presnell said the pair had visited him and other family in Noble County the week prior to the murder.

“Nothing seemed out of the ordinary,” he said. “She was very nice and polite. They stayed a few days before they left and he told me that he would be back next weekend.”

Presnell said he was very fond of his grandson.

“He was very active, very courteous, a woodsman and a hunter and not a druggie. He was just an honest and hardworking man,” he said.

According to his obituary, Presnell’s family will receive friends for visitation today from 3 to 8 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Home, 609 West St., Caldwell. A funeral service will also be held there Saturday at 11 a.m. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to the National Wild Turkey Federation – Ghost Gobblers Youth Hunt, c/o Ryan Miller, 14928 McConnelsville Road, Caldwell, OH 43724.
