AmeriCorps members unite for Day of Service

AmeriCorps members at WSCC and a AmeriCorps VISTA from Friends of the Lower Muskingum joined others from across the country in coordinating activities for National Day of Service in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

The planned activities began on Jan. 14 when AmeriCorps workers posted door hangers and brown bags on neighborhood porches throughout downtown Marietta asking for donations of food. The food collected will benefit the local food pantry.

On Saturday, Jan. 19, WSCC AmeriCorps members, students from the Upward Bound program at WSCC, and the AmeriCorps VISTA member in After School Alliance will return to neighborhoods in downtown Marietta to pick up the bags food donations.

Another planned activity occurred on Jan. 17. AmeriCorps members at WSCC and AmeriCorps VISTA from Friends of the lower Muskingum volunteered at the local Boys and Girls Club. Activities included a video about MLK JR, his dream and his importance to American history, as well as an arts and craft activity called Hands of Friendship and Give Peace a hand. This activity gave the students an opportunity to trace their hands and write in the palm of it what they can do, as individuals, to enrich their community. Students were also asked to write down their dream of how the world would be if everyone did something for others. The “Hands of Friendship and Give Peace a Hand” artwork were posted on a wall at the Boys and Girls Club as a reminder for students to remember why Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed.
