Washington County Garden Club

The Washington County Garden Club met March 14 at Pinehurst Christian Church. Kim Henry called the meeting to order. Secretary Diana Miller read the previous meeting’s minutes. They were approved as read.

Members commented on the 2013 Fair Flower Show. It was stressed that everyone needs to follow the scheduled flower show rules as strictly as possible. Next year some adjustments might need to be made with the number of arrangements and the classes. It was suggested for all garden clubs to go over the rules at their August meetings. To make others aware of the opportunities to participate an informational paper might be provided with the names and numbers of contact people in each garden club. To insure more publicity a reporter for the local newspaper will be invited to our July meeting. More OAGC fair entry tags will be ordered.

Anita Beeney showed the signs that she ordered to advertise the location of the flower show at the fair. It was decided to reimburse her for those and for others she will order.

The 2014 Washington County Fair Flower Show will start Saturday, Aug. 30. Judging will begin at 1 p.m. Those wishing to enter an arrangement, potted plant, or specimen flower may enter under a garden club ticket or buy an entry ticket at the fair board office.

The flower show this year will be titled “Marietta in Bloom.” The special class in the artistic arrangements will be the stretch design. Potted plants will feature a special class of painted caladiums, and the special class in specimens will be the sedum class.

The Little Hocking Garden Club and the Muskingum Garden Club will be making the exhibit gardens this year at the fair. The educational exhibit will be done by Barlow Bluebells Garden Club.

The regional board meeting will be held at the Academy in Chester on April 5 at noon. It will be a potluck lunch. The spring regional meeting will be April 26 at the Community Center in Syracuse (outside Pomeroy). The program for the spring regional includes a morning speaker, Rebecca Wood – herbs and plants, and an afternoon flower arrangement contest.

The fall regional will be held at Rockland Methodist in Belpre on Oct. 25.

Muskingum Garden Club issued an invitation to other county garden clubs to be their guests at their monthly meeting on July 8 at the Reno Community Building.

The next meeting is July 25 at the Pinehurst Christian Church.

The sales table went well. Remember to bring items you think gardeners might enjoy for our next meeting.

Jerry Miller said the blessing and all enjoyed the potluck lunch.
