Waterford FFA soil judging team will travel to Oklahoma

The Waterford FFA Rural Soil Judging team is headed to Oklahoma, after participating in three different soil judging contests that lead them to becoming one of the best Rural soil judging teams in Ohio.

The first contest was the Washington County Soil Judging Contest which was organized by the Washington County Soil & Water Conservation District and was hosted by Witten Farms and the Fort Frye FFA Chapter. The Urban team placed 2nd in county and consisted of Richard Canterbury, Breanna Encinias, Andrew McCutcheon, Clayton Campbell and Aliah Encinias. Canterbury placed 2nd individually in county. The Rural team won county and consisted of Gavinn Tornes, Katie Wagner, Derek Huck and Eric Flowers. Flowers placed 2nd and Huck placed 3rd individually in county. The Rural team, Canterbury, Flowers & Huck will be recognized at the annual Washington County Soil & Water Banquet on Oct. 22 for their efforts.

The second contest was the District 10 Soils Contest which was held in Perry County hosted by the Sheridan FFA Chapter. The Urban team placed 3rd overall out of 16 teams with Canterbury placing 3rd individually out of 60 participants. The Rural team placed 1st overall out of 18 teams with Tornes placing 1st and Huck placing 3rd individually out of 65 participants. Canterbury, Huck and Tornes will be recognized for their accomplishment on Friday, April 17 during the District 10 FFA Banquet which will be held at Waterford High School.

Both the Urban and Rural teams advanced to the State Soils contest on Oct. 11 which was held at Taft Reserve Park in Licking County. The Urban team placed 34th overall out of 50 teams. The Rural team placed 3rd overall out of 50 teams from around the state of Ohio. Derek Huck also took top honors by placing 1st individually out of 200 participants in the contest. Huck will be recognized at this year’s 87th Ohio State FFA Convention on April 30 for his efforts. Huck has also become the first member in Waterford FFA history to place 1st individually in a state CDE contest. The Rural team has now advanced to the National Soils Contest that is to be held from May 5 to the 7 in Oklahoma City. This is also the first time the Waterford FFA Chapter has advanced to the National Soils contest.
