Creating Healthy Communities Program partners with different projects

The Washington County Health Department’s mission is to ensure healthful environments, prevent disease, and prolong life for the citizens of Washington County. One of the primary resources in accomplishing this mission is the Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) Program. This program seeks to reduce the incidence of chronic disease in Washington County by creating healthy places to live, learn, work, and play. Initiatives of the program are guided by the Washington County Health Department and carried out by the collaborating partners of the Creating Healthy Communities Coalition. The 2017 Creating Healthy Communities projects consist of:

¯ Community garden in Marietta.

¯ Extending a multi-use trail in Devola.

¯ Installing salad bar at the Belpre Elementary School.

¯ Installing a playground equipment either at a Belpre school or preschool.

¯ Developing a school garden at Ewing School.

¯ Installing playground equipment at Dodge Park in Beverly.

¯ Advocating smoke-free and tobacco-free parks throughout Washington County

Our vision is to make the healthy choice, the easy choice, and we are committed to preventing and reducing chronic disease. Through cross-sector collaboration, we are activating communities to improve access to and affordability of healthy food, increase opportunities for physical activity, and assure tobacco-free living where Ohioans live, work and play. By implementing sustainable evidence-based strategies, Creating Healthy Communities is creating a culture of health.

Rabia Karim is Creating Healthy Communities (CHC) coordinator at the Washington County Health Department.
