Marietta College announces Learning in Retirement line-up

Vladimir Putin’s long reign as Russia’s powerful president will be one of the featured subjects in the spring lineup of Learning In Retirement courses at Marietta College. Professor Mike Tager from the MC Dept of Political Science will teach the course beginning March 21.

The full schedule of classes has been announced for the spring session of the Institute of Learning in Retirement at Marietta College. All classes are open to any member of the community, regardless of age. This season will mark the 25th year of classes for the community, according to Peter Polites, director.

Each of the courses will last eight weeks, meeting once per week for two-hour sessions. Classes will start Monday , March 19. The cost per class is $30.

Barb Moberg, Program Chair, said the program is organized by volunteers and all courses are taught by knowledgeable instructors.

The spring session classes are:

Memoir Writing Workshop will offer instruction in the basics of the memoir along with samples of autobiographical writing by published writers. Students will be active participants in getting their unwritten stories onto the page in a workshop setting leading to self-expression and satisfaction. The course be on Mondays, beginning March 19, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 124. The teacher is Lois Spencer, English Instructor, Ohio Valley University.

H.G. Wells: Novelist, Historian and Futurist. Wells is best known today for his science fiction novels, but he was better known in England in his time for his literary novels, his historical writings, his scandalous sexual life and his advocacy of free love. His Outline of History sold two million copies in English. This course will be taught by Ted Goertzel, Ph.D. retired Rutgers University professor and will meet on Tuesdays, starting March 20, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 124.

Return of the Czar: Putin’s Russia. This course will cover the rise and long reign of Vladimir Putin and how an obscure bureaucrat became the president of Russia. The course will coincide with the March 2018 Russian presidential election, which everyone expects to result in an overwhelming Putin victory. How might Russian politics and policies evolve in the late Putin era, and what might a post-Putin Russia look like? The instructor will be Mike Tager, Ph.D., Marietta College. The course will meet on Wednesdays, commencing March 21, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 124.

Your Immune System in Health and Illness. This course will unveil the inner workings of your remarkable immune system and how it can identify and destroy almost any type of foreign pathogen, yet be indifferent to the normal cells of the body. A variety of immune related topics will be covered, including disease immunity, autoimmune disorders and allergies, celiac disease and irritable bowel syndromes, vaccines and cancer immunotherapy, as well as immune deficiencies and AIDS. Teaching the class will be Steve Spilatro, Ph.D., Marietta College. This class will be on Thursdays, beginning on March 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 124.

Want to Take Control of Your Camera? This class will teach the craft of digital photography. The basic features of digital cameras and how each plays a role in creating photographs will be discussed. This course will be of great interest to all learners who want to apply the basic techniques of digital photography that will turn snapshots into great photography. Whether you own a point-to-shoot or a more advanced DSLR, this class will give you a better grasp of your chosen tool to make successful images. This class is not recommended for those who use a cell phone for a camera. This class will be taught by Bruce Wonderlich, Production Director, Bird Watcher’s Digest and will meet on Fridays, starting March 23, from 3 to 5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, room 209.
