Playground renovation project fundraising underway

Northwest Territory Community Playground enters 2018 Legacy of Play Contest

With months of planning and preparations, the Northwest Territory Community Playground is launching into fundraising beginning with the Kiwanis International’s 2018 Legacy of Play contest, running from May 15 to 31 online. The 10 entries with the highest number of votes go into the final selection for a chance to win $25,000 toward their playground project. Voting can happen daily, and be shared on social media by visiting the Northwest Territory Community Playground’s Facebook page. Click on the picture of the children playing on the playground, scroll to the bottom of the page and vote. Vote on your computer at home, at work, your cell phone (2 times, once with Wi-Fi and once without), I Pads, etc. If you do not have a Facebook page, go to the link: https://wyng.io/7KCQGx

The Northwest Territory Community Playground will be a complete renovation of the current Washington Street Playground in downtown Marietta located on the corners of Fifth and Washington streets, which was last updated more than 28 years ago. The project will be an inclusive design so that all children and community members can utilize the park. There will be paths and ramps connecting the different levels of the park, lighted pathways and courts, a new soccer field with artificial turf, a level basketball court, new tables and benches and age appropriate inclusive equipment and activities.

“This is an exciting time for Marietta to bring the community together. It is a worthwhile, historical project for all our children,” said Marcia Stewart, chairwoman of the Northwest Territory Community Playground committee.

This space serves the entire community through outdoor activities and educational play. Utilized by many area organizations, the project also has the support and had meetings with Marietta City Council, Marietta City Schools, the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office, and the Native American Alliance of Ohio. With an estimated cost and attainable amount of $1.5 million, the committee is actively fundraising and writing grants for this large and permanent project. The community can support the park through donations, getting involved and spreading the word, including voting in the 2018 Legacy of Play contest between now and May 31, 2018.
