T-shirt design winner announced for 2019 Bunny Hop
Though Easter is late this year, winter cyclones and heavy rains have impeded all but the most determined runners and walkers this spring, but those getting in shape for the Beverly-Waterford 5K Bunny Hop are poised to run and walk in any weather. The Bunny Hop, now in its 17th year, will be held April 20, in Beverly. The race, held annually is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 389 in Beverly.
The winner of the annual t-shirt design contest for the 2019 Bunny Hop is Ethyn Zimmer, a ninth grade student at Fort Frye High School. Ethyn, of Lowell, is a student in Kathy Allen’s Art class at Fort Frye where his favorite art projects involve working with paints. Ethyn says of his art experiences, “I love to draw and I love the freedoms we have in art class with our drawings.”
In his t-shirt submission, he focused on the running aspect of the bunny and his outfit. Ethyn’s drawing will appear on over 600 shirts, silk screened by Karen Van Dyne of Side Line Sports during race weekend.
Proceeds from the Bunny Hop race benefit the Beverly Waterford Volunteer Fire Department and Emergency Medical Squad as well as many other American Legion Auxiliary-sponsored community projects and events. Over one hundred volunteers including members of the following groups participate in making the Bunny Hop a success: Lions Club (and their Junior member Leos), Fort Frye and Waterford High School National Honor Societies, Boy and Girl Scouts, and of course the backbone of the event, the Auxiliary members. Over the past 16 years, thanks to supportive lead sponsors and hundreds of community volunteers and participants from many states, the Bunny Hop has raised over $60,000 to benefit the Beverly and Waterford communities.
Runners and walkers interested in participating in this year’s Bunny Hop 5K can visit the Bunny Hop website at bunnyhop5k.com for information about the race, race route and online registration. While registration forms can be found at local businesses in Beverly and Waterford, registration forms can be downloaded at the website as well. Register before April 14 and be guaranteed a 17th Annual Beverly-Waterford t-shirt sporting Ethyn’s winning design!
Race day registration begins at 7 a.m. on April 20, as well as packet pick-up for those pre-registered. The 5K for runners begins at 8:30 a.m. and five minutes later at 8:35, the walkers will start. Participants leave Fort Frye High School and run through residential sections of Beverly, returning to Fort Frye High School for the finish. Following the race, door prizes are awarded to volunteers and participants, and race results and awards are given for the top three male and female participants in each age category and overall winners. The Bunny Hop is part of the 2019 River City Runners’ Running and Walking Series.
