From staff reports

A Parkersburg man pleaded guilty Monday in a case where he attempted to strangle his girlfriend with Christmas lights.

Gurmel McDonald, 31, of 91 Central City Road in Parkersburg, pleaded guilty to fourth-degree felony charges of aggravated assault and disrupting public service in Washington County Common Pleas Court.

The charges stem from a Nov. 17 incident where McDonald invaded the Belpre home of his pregnant girlfriend who had a restraining order against him. During the invasion, McDonald attempted to strangle the victim with a string of Christmas lights. McDonald also destroyed the victim’s phone when she threatened to call the police, prompting the disruption of public service charge.
