Marietta pastor to lead services

The Rev. Marjorie S. Bevans will lead the 1 p.m. service on Feb. 5 at Christ Memorial Episcopal Church, 409 Columbia Ave. in Willliamstown. She will deliver the gospel message and hold Holy Eucharist. All are welcome. She will also hold Holy Eucharist and worship on Feb. 19.

Bevans grew up on a farm in the Piedmont region of Virginia. After a brief career as a jockey and horse trainer, she received her B.A. in philosophy from The University of Virginia, and while attending law school at George Mason University began to feel God’s call into ministry in the church. After working as director of Religious Education at St. John’s, Georgetown, in Washington, D.C., she served as missioner to an Eskimo village on the Arctic Coast, helping to establish the northernmost Episcopal Church in the world, St. Alban’s-in-the-Arctic in Point Lay. From there she was sponsored for ordination by the Diocese of Alaska and went to seminary at Nashotah House in Wisconsin, from which she received her M.Div.in 2000.

Bevans has served parishes in Richmond, Petersburg, and Lawrenceville in Virginia. She also served as the chaplain of the Virginia Horsemen’s Benevolent Protection Association at Colonial Downs, in New Kent, Va., for about 10 years.

Bevans currently serves as the rector of The Memorial Church of the Good Shepherd in Parkersburg, where she has been since November 2010, and she is the dean of the Ohio Deanery, a member of the Diocesan Evangelism Commission and the Board of Examining Chaplains. Bevans and her husband, Bruce, who is the priest-in-charge of Trinity Episcopal Church in Moundsville, live in Marietta.
