John C. McKeown
John C. McKeown “Pop” was born Dec. 21, 1923, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Jessie Hill McKeown and Charles McKeown. John left his earthly body Jan 22, 2013.
John served as a staff sergeant with the 629th Engineers in WWII. He fought battles and campaigns at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. Digging up landmines in the morning and staging tank ambushes later in the day. His only comment about those types of tasks, “I didn’t like that much.”
John came home from the war and fell in love with the woman of his dreams. He was married to Ellen Jane (Pat) Patterson on June 30, 1951, and they remained together until her death in 2008. John never remarried and continued to miss her every day until his death.
John went to college at night and worked during the day until he obtained his degree and became a mechanical engineer. John worked for several companies during a stellar business career spanning more than five decades in many countries.
John and his family lived in Marietta, Ohio, from 1962 to 1972 and he enjoyed golfing with many friends at the Marietta Country Club.
John is survived by his son, John McKeown Jr., his wife Terri and his grandson Johnny, Hilliard Ohio; and he is survived by his daughter, Pat, and his son-in-law, Ray, in Sebring, Fla.
John loved the staff from Good Shepherd Hospice who sang hymns with him as they helped him with his care. He also dearly loved Juanita Folsom; she not only was his barber but she was his favorite preacher who prayed with him in his last hour.
John always had a smile and a good sense of humor. A service to celebrate his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers and cards please send donations to Good Shepherd Hospice Bud and Donna Somers Hospice house 1110 Hammock Rd., Sebring, Fla., 33870.
