Francis J. Huck

Another World War II veteran has died. Francis J. Huck, 87, of Masonic Park Road, Marietta, passed away Feb. 17, 2013 at University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland.

He was born May 19, 1925, to Louis and Louise Burkhart Huck. He graduated from Marietta High School, Class of 1943. He entered the service in 1944 in the Navy Seabees Construction Battalion, where he served on Okinawa, building up Marine air bases.

Upon returning from the service, he attended The Ohio State University, where he graduated with a degree in horticulture. He partnered with his father and his brother as L.E. Huck and Sons, raising potatoes and commercial vegetables for many years, and later as Huck Brothers Potato Growers. When he left the farming business he went with the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Farmers Home Administration, serving as assistant county supervisor in Portsmouth, Marietta, New Philadelphia and Carrollton, Ohio over a period of 19 years, retiring in 1997. He later was employed by Community Action as a van driver, transporting patients for treatment.

For many years he was a member of the Ohio Potato Growers and Marietta Truck Growers associations. He was a two-term member of St. Mary Parish Council, having served as president. He was a 60-year member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #478 and a 4th Degree Knight. He was also a member of St. Vincent DePaul Society, as well as the American Legion and VFW. He was an avid Buckeye fan, “win or lose.” His favorite pastime was bowling, and he had belonged to a league for many years, and more recently had joined his favorite bowling buddies on Mondays and Thursdays.

Francis is survived by his wife of 56 years, Joan Milsark Huck, whom he married on Sept. 15, 1956; six children, Tom (Kim) Huck of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, Juliet of Los Angeles, California, Andy (Josie) of Powell, Ohio, Elaine of Phoenix, Arizona, Cathy Brown of Westerville, Ohio, Chris (Mike) Slaughter of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren, Vince Huck, Anthony Huck, Alli Brown and Holly Brown; a brother, Louis Huck Jr. and family; as well as many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Catherine Poynter, Regina Klinger, and Pauline Hetz; and a son, Walter “Scooter” Huck.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Vincent DePaul Society, c/o St. Mary Church, 506 Fourth St., Marietta, Ohio, 45750; or to St. Mary’s School Tuition Assistance, 320 Marion St., Marietta, Ohio, 45750.

Funeral liturgy, with Mass, will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday (Feb. 22, 2013) at St. Mary Catholic Church. The Rev. Msgr. John Michael Campbell will be the celebrant. Friends may call from 1 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Marietta Chapel of Cawley & Peoples Funeral Home, 408 Front St. There will be a vigil service at 3 p.m., and the rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be in New St. Mary’s Cemetery, with full military honors.
